All Friends are Not Equal: Using Weights in Social Graphs to Improve Search
نویسندگان
چکیده
When searching for a person in an online social network, most contemporary networks return source-target paths, ranked only by degrees of separation. Not only does this fail to reflect social tie strength (how well two people know one another), it also does not model asymmetry in social relationships (i.e. just because one person pays attention to another, it does not mean the latter will reciprocate). We propose that search in social networks can be made more effective by incorporating weighted and directed influence edges in the social graph, thus capturing both tie strength and asymmetry. Formally, the influence a person A has over person B is defined as the proportion of B’s investments B makes on A. We study two large real-world networks, DBLP (a computer science bibliography network) and a network formed by one month of Twitter retweet data. Our experiments show that for these social networks, the best paths according to our influence metric are not necessarily the shortest paths: a longer path is better in 68% of searches in Twitter and 45% of searches in DBLP. Furthermore, even when the best and shortest path lengths are equal, we find that the best path is often better than a random shortest path of the same length by a significant margin.

Graph Bisection Modeled as Binary Quadratic Task Allocation and Solved via Tabu Search
Balanced graph bisection is an NP-complete problem which partitions a set of nodes in the graph G = (N,E) into two sets with equal cardinality such that a minimal sum of edge weights exists between the nodes in the two separate sets. In this paper we transform graph bisection to capacitated task allocation using variable substitutions to remove most capacity and assignment constraints. The resu...

متن کاملSocially enhanced search and exploration in social tagging networks
Social tagging networks have become highly popular for publishing and searching contents. Users in such networks can review, rate and comment on contents, or annotate them with keywords (social tags) to give short but exact text representations of even non-textual contents. In addition, there is an inherent support for interactions and relationships among users. Thus, users naturally form group...
متن کاملEfficient Local Search in Coordination Games on Graphs
We study strategic games on weighted directed graphs, where the payoff of a player is defined as the sum of the weights on the edges from players who chose the same strategy augmented by a fixed non-negative bonus for picking a given strategy. These games capture the idea of coordination in the absence of globally common strategies. Prior work shows that the problem of determining the existence...
متن کاملA New Robust Bootstrap Algorithm for the Assessment of Common Set of Weights in Performance Analysis
The performance of the units is defined as the ratio of the weighted sum of outputs to the weighted sum of inputs. These weights can be determined by data envelopment analysis (DEA) models. The inputs and outputs of the related (Decision Making Unit) DMU are assessed by a set of the weights obtained via DEA for each DMU. In addition, the weights are not generally common, but rather, they are ve...
